WAN Mode Overview

The WAN Mode function allows you to flexibly configure the number of WAN ports according to actual network needs. The ports of the gateway can be divided into the following categories: fixed WAN port, variable WAN /LAN port, and fixed LAN port (some models also have LTE port or USB port). The variable WAN/LAN port and USB port can be switched as the WAN port when selected in the WAN Mode settings. Otherwise, the variable WAN/LAN port will be used as the LAN port, and the USB port will be unavailable.

WAN Mode Configuration Guide

  • In Standalone mode

Go to Network > WAN > WAN Mode.

The fixed LAN port option is not displayed here. The grayed-out option indicates that it is a fixed WAN port and cannot be operated. When a port is checked, it means it is set as a WAN port, and the icon below will be displayed in red and marked as "WAN"; when a port is not checked, it means it is set as a LAN port, and the icon below will be displayed in blue and marked as "LAN".

Enable/disable the port you want to operate and click Save. After confirming the modification, the gateway will automatically restart for the settings to take effect.

  • In Controller mode

Taking Controller5.13.30.8 as an example, access the site of the adopted gateway and go to Settings > Wired Networks > Internet > WAN Mode > WAN Ports Config.

The fixed LAN port option is not displayed here. You must operate the button status in the "SET TO WAN PORT" column. The button is blue in the enabled state and gray in the disabled state. (The fixed WAN port is displayed as "--" because the operation is not allowed.)

When the status corresponding to the port is set to enabled, it means it is set as a WAN port. When the status corresponding to the port is set to disabled, it means it is set as a LAN port.

Enable/disable the port you want to operate and click Apply. After confirming the modification, the gateway will automatically restart for the settings to take effect.

Should I switch the WAN Mode?

For the following scenarios, it is recommended that you switch the WAN Mode to meet your usage needs.

  • If you have multiple broadband access and want to access the internet through multiple lines, and the number of WAN ports currently set by the gateway does not meet your needs, you can switch the idle WAN/LAN ports to WAN ports.
  • If the number of default WAN ports on the gateway is greater than your usage requirements, or if you need more ports to be used as LAN ports, you can switch the idle WAN/LAN ports to LAN ports.

How does it work?

Determine the number of WAN ports that meet your needs. After saving the changes, the gateway will automatically restart, and the changes will take effect after the restart. All old configurations related to the port will be deleted, and the port will be set to the WAN or LAN port. Each WAN port in the open state can be configured with the connection type and other parameters according to your service provider's requirements.

Precautions

When switching the WAN Mode, please note the following issues:

1. The ports that can be switched to WAN Mode differ for each model. Please refer to the actual page display. The above examples are for reference only.

2. The fixed WAN port set on some models cannot be switched.

3. For some models, when all LAN ports on a device are WAN/LAN variable ports, it is not allowed to set all ports of the device as WAN ports.

4. Some models only allow WAN ports to be opened in sequence. For example, if you want to select WAN3 as the WAN port, the premise is that WAN1 and WAN2 have been chosen as WAN ports.

5. Any change to the number of WAN ports will cause the device to restart. Please ensure that the device's current LAN port and WAN port are connected correctly after the restart. For example, after switching a WAN port to a LAN port, you need to unplug the previous WAN end network cable or replace it with another WAN port. Otherwise, the client of other LAN ports may obtain the WAN end IP and be unable to manage the device.

Common Problems

1. Can I modify the WAN Mode of multiple ports simultaneously?

Yes, you can enable/disable one or more ports as WAN ports within the allowed range according to your needs. Ensure the modified port's wiring is correct after the configuration is saved.

2. Which modules will be affected after I modify the WAN Mode?

When the WAN Mode is modified, the device will restart, and all configurations on the associated modified ports will be cleared. Related modules containing WAN port option configuration entries may be affected, such as VPN, ACL, Load Balancing, Link Backup, Policy Routing, DDNS, etc. For example, when you modify the WAN Mode to reduce a WAN port, the VPN entry previously associated with the WAN port will be deleted, and the previously established VPN tunnel will no longer take effect. Therefore, before modifying the WAN Mode, please confirm that the selection of the WAN port in the entry configuration of other modules is as expected. After modifying the WAN Mode, you can update the WAN port options in other module entries according to the latest WAN port configuration.
