These tips can help you maximize your online gaming experience while using a TP-Link gaming router.

1. Use a wired Ethernet or 5GHz or 6GHz Wi-Fi connection:  A wired network while gaming has always been the recommended option.  Wired connections generally are more stable and have greater speeds. With the onset of Wifi6 and Wifi7 wireless has started to become a more viable option. However, you still want to avoid using 2.4GHz for gaming.

2. Update the firmware of your router to the latest version. Keeping your router updated is like doing regular maintenance on your car. Firmware updates provide updates in compatibility and security patches that ensure your router is running in top form.. You can download the latest firmware from TP-Link Support page.

3. Enable HomeShield on the router to protect your network. Malicious attacks on your network can wreak havoc when playing games. HomeShield helps prevent these attacks and keeps your network safe and secure.

4. Close and terminate any programs that download or stream music/video. An open and free bandwidth is ideal when gaming.  Saving downloads for when you are not gaming or reducing active streams of video and music will reduce competition between your devices for available bandwidth and allow the router’s CPU to focus on your game.  The WTFast feature built into your gaming router is designed to accelerate game traffic, but it cannot prevent other device traffic from affecting your game.  So controlling what is online at the same time can improve a game's performance.

5. Avoid using a VPN with WTFast. This can have negative effects on your game connection. A VPN may cause unexpected lag due to server changes. You should halt your VPN when you are gaming to prevent this issue.
