How to Setup Parental Controls using the TP-Link Tether App

Recent updates may have expanded access to feature(s) discussed in this FAQ. Visit your product's support page, select the correct hardware version for your device and check either the Datasheet or the firmware section for the latest improvements added to your product.
Parental control is used to control children’s internet access behavior. On Tether APP, you can specify certain time period for the children to access internet and block some websites via Parental Control Function.
Note
1. Please make sure the Private MAC Address is disabled on your clients, otherwise, the parental control may not take effect.
2. Some features in the Parental Control may vary by model.
Case 1. If your TP-Link router supports Homeshield function.
Step 1: Open the TP-Link Tether app. Sign in to your TP-Link Cloud account or sign up if you do not yet have one. Click here if you need help setting up a TP-Link Cloud account.
Step 2: Go to the Parental Controls tab and tap Get Started.
Step 3: Create a profile name, select the kid’s age that you want to set up the profile for, then pick an Avatar, and click on Next.
Step 4: Select the device you want to control, click on Done, and then you can see a profile created.
Step 5: Control your Select Devices online time and content with the created profile.
- Filter inappropriate content
- Block specific websites. The websites added here cannot be accessed.
- Set “No Internet” Bedtime to make sure your kids have a full night’s sleep
(Note: It’s needed to upgrade to Advanced Parental Controls to enjoy Weekdays & Weekends and Custom Days schedule.)
Step 6: After the whole process is done, you have created a profile for your kids. And you can click on Delete Profile to delete it if you want.
Case 2. If your TP-Link router supports Homecare function.
Step 1: Open the TP-Link Tether app. Sign in to your TP-Link Cloud account or sign up if you do not yet have one. Click here if you need help setting up a TP-Link Cloud account.
Step 2: Once Logged in, Tap the Icon for your router.
Step 3: Tap on “HomeCare” at the bottom of the screen.
Step 4: Tap on “Parental Controls”.
Step 5: Click on + to create a profile
Step 6: Give the new profile a name and tap “Next”.
Step 7: Select one of the Filter Levels. Each filter level caters to a specific ago group.
Step 8: Under Categories, you will have filtered content. You can also add Apps/Websites to further enhance the filter rules. Once you complete this, tap “Next”.
Step 9: Set Time Limits, You can control how long the devices can access the internet in each profile. You can also set a Bedtime where all internet is cut off for these devices. Once you setup access and bedtimes tap “Next”.
Step 10: Choose the devices you would like under this profile and then tap “Done”.
Step 11: You will be taken back to the profiles page with the new entry listed. Next to the name is a “||” button. You can use this to turn off internet at any time.
Case 3. If your TP-Link router doesn’t support Homeshield or HomeCare function.
Such as Archer A6(V4), Archer A64(V1), Archer A8(V1&V2.2), Archer C59(V4), Archer C6(V4), Archer C64(V1), Archer C80(V2.2), Archer C86(V1), Archer A7(V5).
Step 1: Open the TP-Link Tether app. Sign in to your TP-Link Cloud account or sign up if you do not yet have one. Click here if you need help setting up a TP-Link Cloud account.
Step 2: Once logged, please click the icon of your TP-LINK device and access it. Then tap on Tools> Parental Controls
Step 3: In the upper right corner, tap the “+” button.
Step 4: Give the new profile a name and tap “Next”.
Step 5: Filter inappropriate content, tap + to block websites, then tap “Next”.
Step 6: Set Time Limits, You can control how long the devices can access the internet in each profile. You can also set a Bedtime where all internet is cut off for these devices. Once you setup access and bedtimes tap “Next”.
Step 7: Choose the devices you would like under this profile and then tap “Done”.
Step 8: You will be taken back to the profiles page with the new entry listed. Next to the name is a “||” button. You can use this to turn off internet at any time.
