Which TP-Link Deco Is Right for You? Compare Models

Before You Buy
AtualizadoMay 7, 2026

Not sure which Deco mesh to buy? The right model depends on three key factors: your internet connection type, your home's setup, and any specific installation needs. This guide walks you through each decision point so you can compare TP-Link Deco models and make an informed choice.

Key Takeaways

  • The right Deco model depends on three main factors: your internet access type, your preferred networking method, and your installation requirements.
  • Most Deco models work with fiber-optic and coaxial cable internet. You'll need a modem or ONT provided by your ISP before connecting Deco.
  • If you use 4G LTE or 5G mobile internet, TP-Link offers dedicated Deco models with built-in SIM card slots, including the Deco X80-5G and X50-4G.
  • For DSL internet connections, TP-Link offers DSL-compatible Deco models including the Deco X73-DSL, X50-DSL, and X20-DSL.
  • If your home has thick walls or a challenging layout, the Deco P9 and PX50 support powerline backhaul to extend the mesh network via electrical wiring.
  • For outdoor or ceiling/wall-mounted installations, TP-Link offers PoE Deco models such as the Deco X50-PoE and Deco X50-Outdoor.

To find the best Deco model for your network, you can follow this article based on your actual usage scenario and network requirements.

Step 1: Match Your Deco to Your Internet Connection Type

The type of internet connection plays a big role in availability, speed potential, and performance. Fixed connection types, as in a wire are connected directly to your home, including fiber-optic, coaxial cable, and DSL internet. Satellite internet, fixed wireless, and the increasingly popular 5G home internet round out your potential wireless internet options.

So, how to choose the correct Deco products to match different internet types:

Fiber-Optic and Coaxial Cable Internet

If you want to use Deco, you'll need a modem or ONT provided by your ISP. In most cases, they have been provided by the ISP when you subscribed to their internet service. In this way, almost all the Deco products would work well when connecting to a fiber or cable modem.

4G LTE and 5G Mobile Internet

Mobile internet is largely designed for your phone, but as the technology improves and speeds increase -- especially with the emergence of 5G -- mobile connections are increasingly practical for home use.

In the Deco family, we also have several models that are perfect for 4G LTE/5G Mobile service. For more other 4/5G Deco, see: 4G/5G Mesh solution.

For the mobile Mesh gateway, you can also install external antennas manually to strengthen the mobile signals of Deco:

Fixed Wireless Internet

Similar to 5G, fixed wireless providers send internet signals over the air. But unlike 5G, you'll need a mounted receiver with a direct line of sight to the nearest tower to receive those signals. Please click see Fixed Wireless Access and Why Does it Matter? to know more details about Fixed wireless internet.

Normally, Service providers install an antenna or radio receiver at your home that communicates with the nearest wireless base station to provide you with fixed wireless access. Simply connect your Deco to the antenna via Ethernet cable, and all Deco products are at your choice.

DSL Internet

DSL (also called phone line) is a fixed connection, most popular in areas without access to cable or fiber internet. With DSL, your internet connection runs over copper phone lines.

Here, we also have several DSL service candidates.

Satellite Internet

Satellite internet is the most widely available type of internet because it doesn't rely on ground-laid infrastructure like cables, cellular towers, or line-of-sight antenna connections. Instead, you'll use a mounted dish to connect with geostationary satellites orbiting miles overhead. Starlink is a popular satellite internet option, and all Deco products are compatible.

Please see Connect Deco to Starlink Satellite Dish to know how to set up Deco with a Starlink Satellite Dish.

Aside from the internet connection type, there are other features you might be interested in before purchasing.

Step 2: Choose Your Preferred Networking Method

All of our Deco products support wired and wireless backhaul (except Deco M3W). Under certain circumstances, the house is separated by thick concrete walls, or the modem is located at the far end of the house, which makes it hard to connect satellite Mesh nodes wirelessly to the main unit. Drilling holes in the wall for dragging a long Ethernet cable is not the optimal choice. In this way, transmitting signals via powerline would be an excellent option.

Here we have Deco P9 and Deco PX50, the Powerline Mesh Networks for your choice.

Deco P9

Step 3: Consider Your Installation Requirements

Most Deco products are designed for indoor use and need to be placed on a flat surface. Now we also have Deco models that support POE and Mounting. One of them could even be installed outdoors to expand the mesh network over longer distances, to other buildings, or simply to the pool.

Deco X50-POE
