Objective

This article introduces how to get started with setting up Omada devices without an Omada Controller.

Requirements

  • Omada AP / Switch / Gateway

Introduction

You can set up Omada devices individually without an Omada Controller. However, be aware that there are some limitations to the Standalone configuration. Taking Omada APs as an example, when configured without a Controller, certain advanced features like Voucher and Fast Roaming are not available for configuration. Moreover, the Standalone configuration lacks centralized cloud management and key advantages including Auto Backup, Upgrade Schedule, and more advanced features.

Standalone configuration is only recommended for small-scale networks (typically fewer than three APs) with basic feature needs. For highly scalable networks, we suggest using an Omada Controller to set up your Omada devices. Check out Getting Started with an Omada Controller for more details.

Getting Started without an Omada Controller

Based on the Omada devices you have, you can refer to the following guides to get started with setting up Omada devices without an Omada Controller.

Set Up a Standalone Omada AP

There are two methods available for configuring an AP without an Omada Controller for basic wireless functionality: using the Omada app or using a web browser.

Using the Omada App (Recommended)

Check out the following setup video for setting up an Omada AP (EAP225 is used as an example) via the Omada app.

How to set up a TP-Link EAP via your mobile phone

Setup Overview

Step 1. Hardwire the Omada AP to your Gateway (DHCP server).

Step 2. Connect your mobile device to the default SSID of your Omada AP.

Step 3. Download and install the TP-Link Omada app on your mobile device.

Step 4. Open the Omada app and navigate to Standalone Mode > EAPs.

Step 5. Tap on the discovered Omada AP to enter and finish the setup process.

Step 6. Configure the wireless network according to your network requirements.

Using a Web Browser

Check out the following setup video for setting up an Omada AP (EAP245 is used as an example) via a web browser.

How to set up a TP-Link EAP via Web browser

Step 4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the setup process.

Step 5. Configure the wireless network according to your network requirements.

Set Up a Standalone Omada Gateway

You can configure a standalone Omada Gateway without an Omada Controller using a web browser. For an Omada Wireless Gateway, you can also use the Omada app to set it up.

Check out the following guide to set up an Omada Gateway (ER706W-4G is used as an example) via a web browser and via the Omada app.

How to set up an Omada Wi-Fi Router on the web management page and Omada app

Web Browser Setup Overview

Step 1. Hardwire the WAN port of the Omada Gateway to your modem.

Step 2. Connect your laptop to your Omada Gateway via an Ethernet LAN or via Wi-Fi.

  • Note 1: The Omada Gateway will automatically detect your WAN Connection type.
  1. If your WAN Connection type is Dynamic IP, no further configurations are required.
  2. If your WAN Connection type is PPPoE, contact your internet service provider (ISP) to get your PPPoE username and password for the WAN configuration.
  3. If your WAN Connection type is Static IP, contact your ISP to get your IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS for the WAN configuration.
  • Note 2: Only Omada wireless devices, such as Omada APs and Omada Wireless Gateways, can be set up without a Controller using the Omada app. To set up wired devices this way, please use a web browser instead.

Set Up a Standalone Omada Switch

You can configure a standalone Omada Switch without an Omada Controller using a web browser. Check out the following steps for more details.

Step 1. Connect your laptop directly to your Omada Switch via an Ethernet cable.

Step 2. Configure a static IP address, 192.168.0.100/24, on your laptop. Refer to this guide How to configure static IP on the computer if you don’t know how.
